Toernes sang

Jan Erik Vold (1939- )

The poem is a kind of collage of spectator lingo clichés, so it's not that easy to translate for a non-native. I'd appreciate if you have better suggestions.
This poem is the 23 of the 25 in the book en sirkel is. It was published because of the 1992 games in Lillehammer. It is a tribute to the 10km and for each lap there is one song

Will you hark to the song of those who came second?
those who died always in the third round.
Those who opened briskly, but then started getting that old arching of their back.
Those who knew the meaning of hitting the wall.
Those with too slow 500 meters to rank in the final standings.
Those who struck top form at Fagernes in March.

Those who missed the start and lost a sure medal.
If they hadn't hiccups at the start, they'd have hiccups at the changeover.

Those who fell at the crucial occasion.
Those who had eaten something that wasn't good for them.
Those who fell out with their federation.
Those who didn't have their papers in order.
Those who drew last outer at the fifteen.
The eternal number two, whose name rarely is quoted.
The perpetual second, in whose lustre the victor always reflects his image.
The ever-needed number two,who tells us something about life.
who wants to listen to the song of number two.
Those who couldn't manage the third lap.
Those who started very well, but then the bump on the back came.
Those who knew how it was to meet the wall.
Those who had too bad time on 500m to compete in allround.
Those who skated well in Fagernes (a small place in Norway) in March.
Those who had start problems and lost to an expected medal.
If there wasn't any problem with the sart, there were problems changing course (track).
Those who fell when it was important not to do so.
Those who had eaten something they couldn't stand.

Those who argued with the leaders,
Those who didn't have the formalities ready.
Those who drew the last outer on the 1500.
The eternal nr.2 , whose name is seldom mentioned.
The eternal nr , in whose splendour the winner always is reflected.
The necessary nr 2,
who teaches us something about life.
