Unfortunately there has been a lot of fake Oilily recently on eBay.com and other websites. This page of the Euro Lines Site will be about how to identify the fake Oilily. Often that is not so easy, especially when you are not a regular Oilily buyer. The fakes often look very much like the real ones. Want to have an idea of the fakes being sold? Here is a link to a website with fake Oilily clothing and shoes. You will find these on eBay as well!

Some tips and tricks:

  • When it seems to good to be true it usually is. It is not likely that you can buy Oilily 2006 collection for 10 or 20 dollars.
  • Get familiar with the item you want to buy (or sell). Check if there are other items listed or sold, see if there are differences. Check the catalogs, reputable sellers, the websites  http://www.oililyworld.com and http://www.oililyoutlet.com or maybe even the stores.
  • Only buy something if you can see the picture of the actual item, not from a stockphoto.

  • Everything is faked, even the socks! The fakes started around 2004, prior to that Oilily was not faked.
  • Sizetag
    • Ask for detailed pictures of the inside sizetag.
    • The labels look different then the real ones, the font differs for instance, or the way the sizing is embroidered is different.
    • Often the sizetag is attached different, Oilily mostly attach them before seaming, the fakes often seem to be attached later. Please notice that this it not true for every Oilily, sweaters and nylon coats for instance have the tag attached later.
    • A different label does not always mean it is a fake, sometimes an item doesn't have a label or looks different because it is a sample or an irregular.
    • In the spring/summer 2006 catalog the items all have pink/blue labels, while the actual items in store have the new green labels. So the green ones are real! This is not true for sample items, those still have the pink/blue labels.

  • Hangtag
    • The older red fake tags are a bit thinner cardstock, they feel different. There is also a strange stamp on it which the real tag doesn't have.
    • The real pink hangtag is in a darker shade of pink, it has a diamond and the website on the back. On the inside the real ones have pictures that look like a collage from the catalogue. The fake ones have a messily printed size that looks stamped onto the card.
    • For the 2006 items the hangtags should be attached with green ribbon and not with a plastic tag hanger.

  • Ask for detailed pics of the seams. They often look off and 'cheap'.
  • Same for the fabric
  • Check the zippers, Oilily mostly hides their zippers carefully, fakes often don't.
  • Check the print on the items thoroughly, it may look the same if you have a fast look, but with a closer look you can see some small differences.

  • Sizing
    • Often the sizing of the fakes is off. Sometimes they use sizes like 95, which is not a size Oilily uses. Oilily (and European sizing) adds 6 to every previous size, so 56 plus 6 = 62 plus 6 = 68 etc.

    • Or it says on the tag size 104 / 3-4 which is not accurate since it is 104 / 4-5. Only the more current tags have US sizing on it.

  • Oilily does not sell overstock directly from the factory to wholesalers. They use the outlets for that.
  • Oilily clothing is mostly not made in China, only a few items (especially for the outlet and bags) are made there. But all the fakes come from China.
  • Comparison between real and fake Oilily items

The Shy rope skipping dress from summer 2006: the difference between the real and the fake one is that the heart pocket is attached differently (the stitching is poorly and can been seen on the outside). Also the little Oilily logo on the pocket is messy and it is not even clear that it says Oilily on there. The colors of the fake Shy dress seem less vibrant and darker then from the real one.

The Sherry dress from summer 2006 with the grass print: the real one has little flower applications attached that the fake one doesn't have.

The Scullya bug diary dress is not made with sleeves and se the difference in the red fabric.

See the difference between the real and the fake Dippey pants. The flowers and the string in the waist are missing, Also there is a differenc in the way the pants are cut, the fabric and you even can see a quality difference. The real one looks much thicker then the fake one.

Again there are some pretty obvious differences if you see them next to each other. Both fabrics and colors are different. The real one has some extra details.

Difficult to see the difference here. Most important is the tag, in 2006 the blue tag was not used (except for the sample items).

This top is fake. In the grass there should be little flowers attached and the tag is not attached with ribbon.

What to do when you unknowingly bought a fake Oilily

First of all, make sure it really is a fake. Contact the seller with an email where you wonder about the bad quality or the difference in print. Nicely ask the seller to guarantee the authenticity for you, ask where it was bought, where it was manufactured etc. If they can't guarentee the authenticity for you, ask questions on the Children Clothing Boutique board on ebay.com or email the webmaster.

Made sure it was fake? Then contact the seller again, tell them you know you bought a fake and preferably the differences between the real item and fake, let them know how you know it is a fake. Maybe even refer them to this website. Ask to return the fake for a full refund incluiding shipping both ways.

Does the seller agree on it then send it back with delivery confirmation. Make sure you have a few pictures of the item showing the differences with the real item. Just to be on the safe side! After the seller received the item back they should give you a full refund.

If the seller doesn't accept the refund or isn't responding, report them to eBay through this link, then click on 'email us'. If eBay can't help you there are other options as well:

    • PayPal buyer complaint is actually more for not receiving your item, but you have to go through PayPal first before you can go to your creditcard company. File within 45 days with PayPal, but preferably as soon as possible.
    •
    • Creditcard company
    • Item significally not as described, you can file with eBay if your item is significally not as described (if it is described as genuine Oilily, then you are eligible). Please know that eBay will calculate a fee of $ 25.00 and there is a maximum to the claim of $ 200.00.
    • File a Mail Fraud report
    • FTC complaint form
    • National Fraud information centre
    • Local police if the seller is in the same state

Why you should not buy or sell fakes

I think most people will understand why not to buy or sell fakes, but for those that want reassurance here are some reasons. First of all the quality of the item is less and sometimes even just bad. I personally would rather buy non-boutique clothing then fakes because the quality of the non-boutique clothing is better. Another reason is that the sale of counterfeits has been linked to international crime rings and terrorism, this website has some articles listed about this: http://ihatecounterfeitbags.info/dontbuyfakes.

Selling fakes is against the law and is not lightly taken by the law enforcers!

How genuine Oilily sellers can distinguish themselves

For the sellers that sell authentic Oilily it is very important that they distinguish their auctions from the many fake Oilily auctions. First of all post as many pictures as possible incluiding detailed pictures of the sizetags, the hangtags, the seams, closeups from the fabric etcetera. Give information about where the item was bought, where the item is made and invite your buyer to ask as many questions as possible.

Please forward this link to as many as possible! Let us work together to stop the fakes from entering the market.

With special thanks to all the sellers and buyers that have helped to put this page together, please have a look at the Thank You page for all the links to their auctions. There is an eBaygroup especially for people that would like to join and help out in the fight against fakes, if you would like to join too, please mail the webmaster.
